Condensed Matter Theory The condensed-matter theory group covers a broad range of topics that can roughly be divided into three areas: quantum condensed matter, photonics, and soft condensed matter. Quantum condensed matter is concerned with situations where quantum physics and many-body interactions play a key role to create new physical phenomena. Condensed matter physics (CMP) is the fundamental science of solids and liquids. As the largest branch of physics, it has the greatest impact on our daily lives by providing foundations for technology developments. What is Condensed Matter Physics? Condensed matter physics attempts to understand and manipulate the properties of matter in its solid and liquid forms from fundamental physical principles of quantum and statistical mechanics. For many, condensed matter provides the ideal laboratory for quantum mechanics and statistical physics – with the ability to engineer novel materials and nano-structures.
The electron band structure and the vibrational characteristics of solids will be studied in detail. Condensed matter physics is the largest subfield of physics; its focus is on studying key questions about the origins and nature of matter, where many interacting constituents can combine to produce novel properties, such as how light interacts with the matter.

What I like about CMP is that it doesn’t necessarily require much more than a table and a power supply in order to start experimenting. Research in experimental condensed matter physics at Stanford takes place in the Physics and Applied Physics Departments and has strong connections with the Photon Science Department at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
Modern research in condensed matter physics takes place in both large scale x-ray and neutron scattering facilities, as well as in locally based laboratories, where quantum phenomena are being explored at temperatures near absolute zero.
